The iPhone 6 Plus Mini-Review: Apple's First Phablet

Battery Life
One of the big draws of the larger form factor is battery life. Due to fundamental scaling issues, a bigger phone should be able to achieve greater battery life than a small one. This is because a smartphone's PCB generally remains constant in size, so it becomes an increasingly smaller proportion of the overall device size. This leaves increasingly large areas where batteries fill in the gap. In order to quantify just how big of a difference this makes when going from 4.7" to 5.5", we turn to our standardized battery life test suite. For those unfamiliar with our testing, the display is calibrated to 200 nits and all background tasks are disabled in order to ensure that only the foreground task is active in our tests.
As we previously discussed, the iPhone 6 Plus performs quite admirably in the WiFi web browsing test. As expected, there's a healthy bump over the iPhone 6, but it's not quite a massive leap as a larger battery size might suggest.
Once again, we see a similar pattern with the LTE web browsing test. Since both phones are based on the same platform, it makes sense that their results track quite closely together as we're only scaling display and battery size within the context of these tests.
However, the web browsing test is a mostly display-bound test, even if there is an SoC efficiency aspect that can make a significant difference. In order to better test SoC efficiency and get an idea of the dynamic range that a phone has in battery life, we turn to our compute-bound tests. Unfortunately, Basemark OS II stops the test too early due to low battery notifications in iOS, so we cannot use that test for a proper comparison to other phones.
As shown in these charts, the iPhone 6 Plus manages to sustain a significant boost in battery life when compared to the iPhone 6, and performance is almost identical as well. It seems that the iPhone 6 Plus begins to throttle towards the end of the test simply because it has more time to generate heat rather than any real difference in cooling, as skin temperatures were also around 43C on the iPhone 6 Plus in this test. It's also important to note that the iPhone 6 Plus is rendering at 2208x1242 internally in order to keep proper scaling with the 163 points per inch system that iOS has, which accounts for part of the performance delta.
Overall, battery life on the iPhone 6 Plus ranges between about 20% higher to 40% higher depending on the balance of display power and SoC/baseband power in any given situation. Heavily display-bound situations will be closer to the 20% higher figure while more SoC-bound tasks will tend toward 40% or even higher. Purely idle situations should see even greater improvements as any situation where the display is off will see linear scaling with battery size.
Charge Time
Charge time is one of the key metrics for getting a holistic picture of battery life, as it's impossible to really understand whether a phone will be able to stay mobile as needed without considering recharging. In some cases such as a trade show or travel, it doesn't matter if a phone lasts 20% longer than the competition if it loses all the time gained in time spent on a charger. In order to test this, power is tracked from when the phone is connected to the charger to when it reaches the lowest power draw state on the AC adapter.
Unfortunately, the included charger is the same 5W charger that we've seen for years now. As a result, the iPhone 6 Plus is constrained by the relatively low maximum power that it can put out. Those that wish for faster charging should look into getting an iPad A/C adapter as the iPhone 6 Plus will charge faster when connected to it.

Great review, as always! Anand was telling the truth! This is still a trustworthy website.I'm still waiting for my 6+ (coming 3-4 weeks). This is my transition from my old 4s. Around me, there are iphone users leaving for android as well as android users leaving for iphone. I guess it is about choice, task and maybe also brand loyalty.
Personally, I think I would not consider leave iPhone for Android this year. I need a lot of applications on my device and Apple is treating their application developers really well, then this results a lot of great apps on iOS. This, in my opinion, is the strongest motivation keeping me stay with iPhone.
Android is growing. But it still cannot provide me the great application experience as I get from iPhone.

Now two teens have decided to defect reports of alleged phone in their hands.
In a five-minute video, two boys of 15 years old, walk into an Apple store to try to bend a gold iPhone 6 Plus.
They use so much pressure that the phone display is out, making teens who say they have to flee or “would have ended up paying for it."
The boys, who are considered to Norfolk, then ask a store worker whether or not it is an iPhone 6 plus could bend.
It is believed that the thinner pattern, and the use of aluminum metal in the design, makes the frame to deform.
But Apple employee denies the charge saying it is an "internet rumor."
One of the teens involved in the video says: "The reason why we were laughing because it was really fun.”
"We were at the Apple store bending and breaking your iPhone, which I guess is a criminal damage, but I do not care, to be honest.”
"It's not Apple's fault - they are false advertising, saying it's the best iPhone but clearly it is not whether you can fold in your hands or pocket is ridiculous.."
The duo are not the only ones who try to bend the iPhone 6 Plus, with reports suggesting damaged iPhone can be seen along the Apple stores.
Some customers have even tried to bend the supposedly less prone iPhone 6 Apple has not commented on the matter.
Apple has acknowledged that there are problems with the new iPhones bending in some circumstances, but added that he has only received nine formal complaints.
The experts at Consumer Reports recently suggested some of these claims may have been exaggerated.
During their own stress tests, they found the iPhone 6 plus can withstand more force than was previously claimed - and more robust than the HTC One (M8) and the smaller iPhone 6.
The first reports of iPhones bendy began on Wednesday last week when photos appeared online showing the top of the device out of shape.
YouTube user Hilsenteger Lewis then published a video showing the iPhone 6 Plus Flex using just your fingers, which has already been viewed over 45.3 million times.
To put these claims to the test, Consumer Reports used a so-called "test three point bending."
This involved telephone support at two points in each end before applying a force on the top of the device.
Besides the iPhone 6 Plus, the researchers tested the iPhone 6, HTC One (M8), G3 LG, Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and iPhone 5.
Despite the claims, the HTC One (M8) and iPhone 6 devices were the weakest.
They began to warp and bend when a total of 70 pounds (31.75kg) of force was applied.
The iPhone 6 Plus was third, at 90 pounds (40 kg), followed by LG and G3 iPhone 5 at 130 pounds (59kg) and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 150 pounds (68kg).
The iPhone 6 Plus results show the phone can support 15 pounds (6.8 kg) more strongly than initial reports suggested.
Consumer Reports said that this is more than one fourth of force needed to break three pencils.
Apple to criticism and complaints last week about its iOS 8.0.1 update is also faced after it caused problems with sensors TouchID new phones and data services.
The update was withdrawn, and the problems that now must be resolved by updating to iOS 8.0.2.
Following the reports, and the controversy #bendgate Twitter, Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller said: 'with normal use, a curve is extremely rare and iPhone through our first six days of sale, a total of nine customers have contacted Apple with a folded iPhone 6 Plus'
Apple shares closed almost 4 percent to $97.87 (£ 60.26) Thursday, ending nearly $23billion (£ 14.1billion) in market value."”

LG seems to have a different design though, as their polymer material has a clear case of brittle failure at the limit, which saved the display from shattering."
