I mean AMD has to make money sometimes. They still have over $1B of debt to pay down. Besides the prices are still quite good compared to Intel. Only 2 years ago we were paying $350 for a quad core.

I agree. There is progress from both amd and intel cpus so no hate there. GPUs on the other hand have gone backwards. Im ready for that half price 2070 competitor.

    Is it ?
    Checking Newegg

the 8C/8T core i7-9700k goes for $409 without an HSF. So including an HSF, it sits in between the 12C/24T 3900x and the 8C/16T 3800x

The 6C/6T core i5-9600k goes for $264 (currently on sale), without HSF, so price-wise it goes up against the 8C/16T 3700x (if the latter includes an HSF).

    Why shouldn't they
  • III-V - Monday, May 27, 2019 - link

They should. However, AMD users generally base their loyalty on who sells the most product for the best price. Pricing things at a premium compared to their recent past will piss people off. Not a bad thing for users to be willing to switch whenever they want, but for AMD, it's not a good position to be in when you're easy to switch away from.

This of course, neglects the fact that AMD is doing really well right now, and there is no reason for their users to leave them, but it's worth pointing out. Intel's a household name and a strong brand, and it'll take AMD a lot of effort to equal Intel in that regard.

It's quite likely that AMD will provide good quality coolers on their 3700x and certainly their 3900x as they've stated they will include a cooler. That adds value over and above intels offerings in the same space. I

Selling 12C24T CPUs at $300 will piss the whole industry off, and also the shareholders (of both AMD and Intel).
  • just4U - Monday, May 27, 2019 - link

It might tick off intel customers and shareholders but... AMD also announced it's 64core professional solution.. so the bar has been raised here..

The 3900X is the same price as the 1800X and twice as fast.

100% more performance per dollar in two years.

Intel have been trying to milk us for 7 generations, now. 10% improvements from one generation to another.
AMD and it´s 3700x is making me think it is finally time to upgrade from my Intel i5 2500k @4.8Ghz! :)
