We’ve been waiting on DFI to provide the overclocking aristocracy with a DDR3 based Intel X48 chipset motherboard for quite some time and it looks like there’s a storm brewing back at the DFI HQ. Could this be the return of the king?

DFI kindly sent us their upcoming X48 motherboard press release earlier today. Although the board is not quite ready yet, we already know what to expect – raw overclocking headroom teamed with the best high FSB stability in the business. All the usual Lanparty features will be available; more BIOS options than you can shake a stick at, solid polymer capacitors, EZ-Clear, and excitingly enough - DFI will also be incorporating the Intel ICH10R Southbridge into the package. The NB/PWM cooling solution is a little up in the air at the moment, so we await final details.

We can’t wait to get one of these into the labs and start the arduous task of dissecting Mr Wu’s BIOS. If anyone can get the most out of the X48 our money is slap down on the table with DFI.

More information on the board and cooling will be made available at Cebit 4-9th March in Hannover. For now, here’s an early picture of the board showing off all the prime real estate that should help bring DDR3 and the X48 to life..

Apart from ridicolous comments, this promises to be a great board; something "new" in its own "best of everything" way.

Costly or not, there have to be someone who offers this kind of products too; I'm thinking about the user who makes a big expense once, and then enjoys his machine for months, or even years, without having the opportunity to upgrade or change stuff every month. Somehow like being a driver who makes very little mileage; if he has the money to start, he can buy a Ferrari without worrying about gasoline (continuous updates, on the PC-side).

I've bought a DFI X38 and can't tell how nice it is yet, because of the damn Q9450 delay, and I'm happy to see that this one will only support DDR3; that's because I would slam my head to the wall, if it supported DDR2 and I could have bought one of these instead of my X38.

Being Nehalem awaiting for summer, I seriously doubt that me, or any patient X38 owner will ever consider upgrading to one of these... But for the ones who'll have to assemble a new system urgently within next months, this stuff is surely gonna be the state-of-the-art.

i want to spend ridiculous amounts of money on a quad crossfire setup dammit! comeon! someone give me some love here! oh... umm... i don't even know if the x48 chipset is compatible so yah...oh well.

i hope DFI makes a less feature packed "ultra" version of this board which is more affordable instead of an "expert version (going back to the NF4 naming schemes) with everything but the kitchen sink, cause lots of us want stellar overclocking but dont care for 8 sata2 ports, 20 usb ports, 3 lans etc.

The front-edge of motherboards are starting to look like the back-edge, what with the stacked SATA ports. I think it's just a little silly...Though, considering the cost, maybe it is justified.

This is probably going to be the awesomest board in the history of mankind. Couple X48 with the ICH10R (got something to complain about it though) DFI, DDR3, Crossfire and (hopefully) SLi Support, and you have one hell of a board. Too bad i wont be able to afford this probably >$250 board. I dont understand why intel continues to use the IHS on its Southbridge. It will stay cooler if it had a open Die like its northbridge chipsets do. AMD did away with them long ago, as did Nvidia. Come on intel!

From the reviews I have read on AT about the x38/x48 it's clear that the potential of those chipsets isn't utilized with ddr2. The chipsets were designed to run with ddr3.

Wow. If you look at the picture, it's the NORTHBRIDGE that has the IHS. The southbridge has no IHS at all

Honestly I can't remember seeing an IHS on anything but a CPU. Most high-end boards have that area covered by a heatsink anyway, don't they? Wouldn't be surprised if the final board did also.

Their x38 boards come with a heat pipe cooler and you must attach it yourself. I would guess that this board will come with the same sink. The dk p35 board though comes with a standard sink and from what I have heard it has a void sticker attached to it so removing the sink will void the warranty.
