Introduction

Our first look at an MGE case was the Sidewinder in their Xtreme Gamer line of gaming chassis. For about $57, at the time of publication of this article, we can get a case with a few modifications like a side panel window, a few LED fans to light things up, a high gloss paint finish, and an optional power supply from MGE. This is not a bad deal for those seeking a simple steel case with a few custom modifications to add some glamour to their desktops.

Some, however, look at these factory modifications and make their decisions based on only the modifications instead of the overall quality of the chassis. We should always look at a product as a whole to make decisions on what to buy.

We have had a chance recently to look at another gaming chassis from MGE's XGbox division, the Viper. We opened the box and found a case heavily modified with a custom paint job, custom molded bezel and many other features. Take a look at some of the pros and cons of the Viper.

MGE Viper
The Good
+ Integrated backlit LCD temperature display
+ Included Vigor 450W power supply
+ Clean construction, no sharp edges
The Bad
- Lack of tool-less features
- External visuals may not appeal to some
- Power/HDD LED location

As we get ready to dig deeper into the Viper, we must keep in mind that looks aren't everything, as we hope everyone understands, and that you wait to make a decision until the end of this review, after we have checked out all of the Viper's features and functions in detail.

More information is available on the Viper at MGE's XGbox website.

AnadTech's case review team - Here is what 99% of your readers look for when buying a case:

    Subtlety
    Great Cooling
    Subtlety
    Internal features
    Subtlety
    Room for expansion
    Subtlety

Did my semi-sublimnal hints get the point across?

for an example of just such a case, which I received and setup last week, look here:

im glad i read these comments and found more people like me who are sick of the overblown "modded" cases flooding the market now. I just want something slick, classy, and unobtrusive (why i love my antec sonata so much). Not to mention from my experience these premod cases are loud as hell and cheaply constructed.

I was a little surprised to see the comment about the internal speaker being worrysome. See the question, "The enemy within?" here for why:

Oh yeah, by the way, sorry for the double post but, is Anandtech going to review the Dragon? That case seems quite a lot more interesting.

Sure, it looks a bit cool, but it ain't anything I'd like on my desk. This is something you show off at LAN parties, not using every day.

Besides, the front looks plastic and a bit like it was built in LEGO.

    The upcomoming Dragon looks acceptable...

The blue version of this case looks better than the red, IMO. Microcenter has it advertised with a 500 Watt PSU, but I think it needs to be cheaper than $99 if it going to sell.

is there a shortage of legitimate hardware to review around the labs?

I like the simplistic, clean style of a coolermaster case. Specifically the Praetorian, but those gaudy plastic facings of the reviewed case is definitely not my thing. Neon lighting in cases is distracting for me.
