Audio Performance

For audio testing, we use Rightmark 3D Sound CPU utilization test. This benchmark measures the overhead or CPU utilization required by a codec or hardware audio chip.

Audio Performance - Empty CPU

Audio Performance - 2D Audio

Audio Performance - 3D Audio

The ULi M1575 implements High Definition Azalia audio with the Realtek ALC880 codec. This is the same codec used by ATI in their HD on the SB450 South Bridge. CPU utilization figures remain below 10% across the test results, which is good performance.

However, we know that this audio solution is particularly sensitive to the drivers used. Since ULi is trailing the AT HD performance on the same codec, it appears ULi needs to work to improve the drivers to lower CPU utilization. With revised drivers, it is reasonable to expect the ULi M1575 to perform about the same as the excellent performance of the ATI SB450.

Nice , no active cooling chipset fans to burn out in days after purchase.

Could it really be as simple as the Codec for causing higher cpu usage compared to other codecs or does the audio's hardware have more of a impact? I may go do some research on this.

We have seen very large variations in Azalia HD Audio CPU utilization depending on the driver version used with the codec. That's why we suggested, in the article, that ULi, Realtek, or whichever codec is used for HD audio, may need to do more optimization of the HD Audio drivers.

I don't see why these companys cannot put decent non cpu hogging audio in their south bridge.

They do look to have good disk performance though.

I knew there was a reason I keep using my Creative Sound blaster Audigy 2 sound card ;)
