Today Google released the third developer preview for the M release and at the same time also reveals its official codename as well as final version name: Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The new version officially bumps up the API number to version 23.
The hardware device images for the Nexus 5, 6, 9 and Player are now available for download on the developer pages. Compared to the previous preview there is now a new and final permissions user interface as well improvements to the fingerprint API, with surely many more bugfixes and stability improvements.
The Android SDK has also been officially bumped up to version 6.0 which can now be updated via the SDK Manager. Documentation for all API 23 changes can now be found in the developer reference pages.

Ah excellent. I was hoping for another Android update that I'll never get unless I root my device and spend a few days learning how to install a custom ROM made by someone I've never heard of. Still waiting on Lollipop on the old (not really) T-Mobile Galaxy S4.amdwilliam1985 - Monday, August 17, 2015 - link
I'm sorry, but what's the point of upgrading to lollipop for Samsung devices? My wife's Note 4 just got updated to 5.0.1 from 4.4.4, and she didn't notice much difference. The touchwiz is all over the place. I think the only thing she've noticed is that the notification messages on the lock screen is now much more detailed.
I know there are probably some other changes that we've didn't notice, but come on, it is no where as big of an visual update as my Nexus going from 4.4.4 to 5.0

There's a bit more to an Android update than just cosmetics.ET - Tuesday, August 18, 2015 - link
Well, if you want less storage and less compatibility, moving to Lollipop is the obvious solution. At least that's what it does on a Galaxy Tab S. I'm staying with 4.4 for now, but if Samsung releases Marshmallow I'd be tempted to upgrade just for the permission controls.tipoo - Saturday, August 22, 2015 - link

Wish I could use cocoa with Marshmallow. Would make a killer combination, just as in real life. I'm so tired of the revolting verbose idiosyncrasies of overriding several dozen lines of Java code just to get the application to behave nicely when doing... well, anything.clickbuzz - Sunday, August 30, 2015 - link
