Last month Brian put together a performance preview of Qualcomm's first dual-core SoC: the 1.5GHz MSM8660. The article was mostly focused on GPU performance as the new Adreno 220 is something we were very interested in. The first MSM8660 based smartphones will ship this year, but we benchmarked the SoC using Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon Mobile Development Platform (MDP).

Starting today, the MSM8660 MDP will be available for purchase by any developer through BSQUARE for $1350. Qualcomm's MDP is a nice way of getting a head start on developing for the next-generation of Android handsets based on Snapdragon SoCs.

What if you're an Android developer on a budget? Qualcomm was nice enough to provide us with a MSM8660 MDP to give away to one lucky reader. Here's the box it came in:

Inside this box is, you guessed it, another box that actually houses the MDP itself (and a smaller Pelican case for more portable storage of your MDP):

The MDP features Qualcomm's dual-core MSM8660 running at up to 1.5GHz with an Adreno 220 GPU, as I mentioned above. The MDP has a 3.6" WVGA display, HDMI port, 13MP camera, a total of five microphones and 16GB of on-board Flash in addition to a microSD slot. There's WiFi support but no support for cellular connectivity. The platform runs Android 2.3.

To enter the contest simply respond to this post with a comment about what you'd do with the MSM8660 Mobile Development Platform (please only respond once). Good luck!

In addition to two sweet cases and the MDP, you also get the necessities: USB cable, charger and HDMI cable

If you are particularly interested in developing for Snapdragon, Qualcomm is hosting a mobile conference in San Diego, CA on June 1st and 2nd called Uplinq. We'll of course have someone on the ground there to cover any announcements that happen at the show.

Now the basic rules. The contest is only available to US residents and you're only allowed to enter once - for full details read below.

Entries will be accepted from 9:15 AM ET on April 27, 2011 through 9:15 AM ET on April 30, 2011. Winner will be selected by May 1, 2011.

Good luck everyone :)

I would be absolutely pumped to get my hands on the dev platform. I work on a number of Flash and native mobile projects (primarily iOS but some Android) for my job and in my free time work on trying to make flash apps that run well on both desktop machines and Android devices. The single core Snapdragons are pretty hard to get smooth with even a moderate amount of load... I checked out a Xoom recently and was very impressed with the flash performance and expect that the new platform here could have just enough punch to make the magic happen.
