Sure, as soon as they introduce a processor at some price point, they must never again introduce any better processor at that price point. That's definitely how the computer industry was built.
Technically the 3700x is the 2700x replacement, running at a higher frequency /w 15% improvements clock for clock and a 65W TDP. The 3900X would be hmm.. a refresh of the first gen 1800x I guess.. since it's priced in and around there.
They wouldn't screw anyone. If anything, 16 cores should be the super-maximum number of cores you should feed with merely 2 memory channels. I would personally prefer to max out at 12 cores. I believe one of the reasons the Zen 2 based Threadripper was either canned or postponed was because it would make little to no sense to go above 32 cores with merely 4 memory channels, and they probably have not yet decided if they want to max out at 32 cores (which is what they should do). The same applies to the 64-core Epyc and its 8 memory channels. Beyond 64 cores you need to either add more channels or, more sanely, move to DDR5. Both require a new platform. Intel paired their new cream of the crop AP platform with *12* memory channels, and I believe they intend to max out at 56 cores. That's quite more reasonable.
That is barely a real product. I don’t know who will buy it. It is two standard 28 core cpus (at over 600 square mm each; really expensive) placed on one package. It doesn’t have any of the power optimizations that are possible with chiplets designed to be placed in an MCM. At 400 Watts TDP, it isn’t really a competitor to Epyc 2. The 12 channel memory is more incidental since this product would never have existed if it wasn’t needed as a marketing response to Epyc 2.
Lisa Su confirmed there would be more threadripper in an interview right after the keynote.
