The Test

In recent times, choosing a motherboard cannot be completely determined by a Winstone score. Now, many boards come within one Winstone point of each other and therefore the need to benchmark boards against each other falls. Therefore you shouldn't base your decision entirely on the benchmarks you see here, but also on the technical features and advantages of this particular board, seeing as that will probably make the greatest difference in your overall experience.

Windows 95 Performance of the AOpen AX6L (PCI Video)

CPU Business Winstone 97 Business Graphics Winmark 97
Intel Pentium II - 375** 71.5 180
Intel Pentium II - 338* 68.4 163
Intel Pentium II - 333** 68.1 163
Intel Pentium II - 308 67.5 152
Intel Pentium II - 300 66.9 149
Intel Pentium II - 266 63.0 132
Intel Pentium II - 233 61.0 120

* This speed was achieved using the 75MHz bus speed (75 x 4.5 = 337.5MHz ~ 338MHz)
** This speed was achieved using the 83.3MHz bus speed (83.3 x 4.0 = 332MHz ~ 333MHz, 83.3 x 4.5 = 375MHz)

The Pentium II - 375 scores are simply amazing, with a Business Winstone greater than 70.0 and a Business Graphics Winmark of 180 (the highest I've ever recorded or seen) this combination can't be beat. Now can we all imagine Dual Pentium II - 375's? Oh boy!

Windows 95 Performance of the AOpen AX6L (AGP Video)

CPU Business Winstone 97 Business Graphics Winmark 97
Intel Pentium II - 375* 72.8 186
Intel Pentium II - 338** 68.9 171
Intel Pentium II - 333* 68.6 170
Intel Pentium II - 308 67.8 154
Intel Pentium II - 300 67.4 150

* This speed was achieved using the 75MHz bus speed (75 x 4.5 = 337.5MHz ~ 338MHz)
** This speed was achieved using the 83.3MHz bus speed (83.3 x 4.0 = 332MHz ~ 333MHz, 83.3 x 4.5 = 375MHz)

With the ATI 3D Rage Pro (AGP) the scores are just a tad bit higher, but nevertheless they are still amazing. If you have the choice between a Pentium II - 266 and a 300...I would suggest going for the 300 unless your peripherals don't work well with the 83.3MHz bus speed...but if they do, prepare to be amazed by the World's Fastest x86 Microprocessor running at 375MHz!! Now if Intel would only release that Pentium II - 333 a bit sooner, then we could take that baby up to 400 and beyond...

The Final Decision

AOpen has another knockout on their hands with the AOpen AX6L, how well will it stand the test of time? We'll just have to wait and find out in the meantime...
