Ubuntu One, the cloud storage service available for Ubuntu versions 9.04 and higher, now has an official Windows client. Previously available as a beta, Ubuntu One for Windows gives XP, Vista, and 7 users a free 5GB of cloud storage space in which to keep their files.

Ubuntu One works a bit differently than, say, Dropbox, a competing cloud storage service: for example, if you'd like to sync your My Documents and My Pictures folders, Dropbox would require you to store them within your Dropbox folder, while the Ubuntu One client allows you to select folders anywhere on your hard drive for syncing. Once synced, your files can be accessed from Ubuntu, Windows, and Android devices, as well as through the Ubuntu One web site.

For users with more storage needs, Canonical will bump your space up to 20GB for $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year. You can also add an Android and iOS-compatible MP3 streaming service (which also includes the 20GB storage upgrade) for $3.99 a month or $39.99 a year.

Does Ubuntu have an easy way to run your own "cloud" server that could be used with this client? I.e. just create my own server and use the client with that instead.
Right now I'm using DropBox for non-sensitive stuff, and Wuala for the critical things. Wuala's sharing feature to get more space is quite nifty, and free.

It's fairly easy to run your own private cloud, a google search should give you plenty of how-to's. Don't know if you can target the client to use it though.

How is a "personal cloud" different from a file server?

Ubuntu 9.04? by Ken g6 on Friday, September 30, 2011
I'm running 9.04 right now. I don't see a way to use Ubuntu One. Perhaps you meant 10.04?

Wikipedia page says "runs on" 9.04, not "is included in." That's what I get for referencing Wikipedia - I'll tweak the article.

Time to upgrade, 10.04 is solid.

Syncing with U1 by malkon10t on Friday, September 30, 2011
I think there needs to be a correction for this article. The sync process is similar to Dropbox with one distinction. While Dropbox forces you to dedicate a folder for syncing your files, Ubuntu One only allows you to sync files and folders located within your Windows User directory.
Thank kinda blows since I prefer to keep my files on a separate drive. Is there a workaround or am I missing something?
