The three Rs

I drove down to St. Augustine's College today to give a little impromptu speech to a bunch of graduating seniors from the division of business over there. My dad is a professor at St. Aug and AnandTech was donating some money to the division of business, so they asked me to drop by and share a few words.

Now St. Aug is a much smaller school than NCSU or any of the bigger name schools out there, but I'd say the level of enthusiasm and interest in the students was much higher than I'd seen anywhere else. The students I spoke to seemed to actually want to be there and most were appreciative of the opportunities they've been given, at least from my brief interaction with them. Even the professors there seemed to be much more caring than those I'm used to at State. It was truly a refreshing experience.

My dad always told me why he liked teaching at a smaller school like St. Aug rather than a larger institution, but it wasn't until today that I really got a feel for why that was. It was good, I had fun.

I then took some time to drop by my old high school and say hello to a couple of teachers. I got into some nice discussions about teacher apathy with them, especially considering that I've always seen my high school teachers to be the ones who were actually in it for teaching. It's good to see that even they share my frustrations with higher education these days.

More on all this later, for now I've got to go grab some lunch and then get back to work on my projects.

Take care all.
