“Anything that would affect or give you a tactical advantage, you can’t purchase with real cash. You have to earn that by playing the game.”

Yes but by design the game will make it a pain in the ass to do anything without paying, constantly.

Can't I just give you $50 and play the same game as everyone else?

    agree 100%

i will not play if i have to keep shelling out for digital "stuff." i would buy and play it. i might even pay a monthly subscription, if it was good enough.
worst news possible for the mechwarrior franchise.

I'm glad MechWarrior isn't dead yet. Mech 2 was the first "true" 3D game that I played that actually used polygons instead of sprites. I still fondly remember the first time I started up the Mech 2 demo on my P60 and saw the cockpit view. I was blown away.

Mech sims and Space sims are sadly an extinct species. :(

God I loved MW2. It was such an amazing feeling playing that back then. I remember how you had to lead the target because most people were on dial-up back then. If I still had a working sidewinder joystick I might fire that up again. Reply

"Ekman hopes to include joystick support."

Hopes? I'd think joystick support would be mandatory. Mechwarrior 2 was the reason I bought a Sidewinder joystick so I could aim and rotate the turret at the same time.

No kidding. This is like Ford "hoping to include steering wheels" on the 2013 cars. Reply

It would be interesting if they would allow mapping of controls in more than one joystick/device.

That way, you could use your Sidewinder joystick on a hand, while using a Throttle control on the other, on a HOTAS setup. A nice throttle like the CH Pro Throttle has a myriad of configurable/programmable buttons and hat switches, and even has an analog stick that you could use as a mouse!

Then circle yourself with an Eyefinity setup... make your computer chair feel like a "mech cabin". ;)

    Saitek Throttle quadrant:
    1st for speed
    2nd for cabin rotation
    3rd for zoom ^^

They've talked about joystick support oddly. Ekman told PC Gamer they're "dedicated to it." So it sounds like its happening but he's yet to announce details. The breadth of support will probably depend on the specifics of their engine and how well the netcode handles a wide variety of inputs. Reply

This is the most disappointing gaming news I have seen in a long time. What is the risk involved? Plenty of garbage games are green lit and pushed out everyday, yet one of the best franchises cant get a good release due to risk? Reply

You really wanted MW on a console again? First person I have heard of. Reply
  • ender707 - Tuesday, November 01, 2011 - link

The console spin-off that you are referencing did not do the mechwarrior series justice, that is not debatable.

However, there is no reason that the PC version of this game could not be ported to the Xbox / PS3 and controlled with the game pad.

I think games like Mass Effect have shown that complex controls can be made intuitive on the game pad by using radial menus mapped to the bumpers, among other techniques.

Yes I know the PC is superior in every way, blah blah blah.

Sounds pretty good actually. MW is one of the game types that really want to be multiplayer. Just hoping they'll do it right, not wrong. Glad it'll be free to try once finished.

Don't expect my cash for new paint jobs or unique purple lasers though.

    Uh Oh.

Lets hope its not a money leeching disaster like Battlefield Play For Free has turned out to be.

If someone reviewed the free to play games I'm sure that would be rated the worst rip off of them all.
