Of course they would have port it to x86 first. Otherwise it would not run at all!

When has a console beat a PC or a PC beat a console?

I have never even seen benchmarks which directly compare the two (would be interesting if someone could set up similar hardware, but they prob can't).

Also, if they had an X2, they probably would have used one. Besides, how do you know what processor they used. All it said was intel pcie board. Intel has a few processors which fit that description. For all you know, they used some new chip from intel which is 10x as fast as the X2 (ok... its theoretically possible).

I agree...run the alan wake demo on a 4800+ or an FX-55/57 then with Ati520/GF70 Multi-GPU/SLI then we can make a conclusion if next gen consoles will beat upcoming gen PCs. Reply

One 1600x1200 32bit color frame takes up 7.68MB of memory. Iirc, the AA just a function performed on the frame it doesn't effect the size of the frame in memory. Reply

    "1600x1200 4x AA frame"

You're not sticking the whole frame. Only the AA data which is calculated on the same die as the memory in real time.

Basically the GPU core doesn't even calculate AA, it doesn't even know it's there. It's all done on the fly therefore you don't need a HUGE amount of memory in order to process the AA.

    Basically COMPLETELY free AA.

I dont see any good reason to use embedded RAM on a PC vid card. Try sticking a 1600x1200 4x AA frame into lousy 10MB buffer (thats what the xbox gpu does with that RAM). Not gonna happen, it's too big. No idea what good it is on the consoles either since it will just limit the resolution and AA depth - or performance.

''We aren't expecting to see the official R520 launch until later this year and not at Computex''

    Isn't Computex next month?

how does the R500 compare to R520 and previous gen cards? [in terms of performance]

    does anyone know?

I was confused there for a minute. I sat down to read the newest 3 articles on Anandtech and when I finished the one on Xbox 360, the R520 article had disapeard! I thought ATI had contacted Anandtech or something. Reply

woops, sorry about that guys - this was supposed to be listed as an Insider Story, not in the normal reviews section. I just got back from the show and hadn't had a chance to check it until now.

For those asking why there is no Day 1 wrapup like we normally do, there's honestly not that much at all. This show was a lot smaller than I had expected, so there's not as much to talk about. Honestly, the Alan Wake demonstration was quite possibly the (software) highlight of the show - and I couldn't take any pictures of the demo.

There is more that I'm working on, but I can't talk about it until tomorrow :)

    Take care,
    Anand

#9: Like #19 said, all games are optimized for XBox 360, so they had to do some conversion or some (gasp!) emulation in order for it to run smoothly. Remember how they use COMPLETELY different instruction sets! (PPC vs x86) Reply

#19 That's right as I said they should have run it on the X2 4800 (well I said AMD but the 4800+ is even better) and watch it fly, baby, fly ... Reply

it was also probably hiccupping becuase the game is optimized for the xbox and probably multithreaded and all that good stuff....

love the bits! i for one was happy not to have to spend 15-20 min on one article to get up to date

The reason it is hiccupping is because they used Intel as the cpu (wink wink). What the bleep were they thinking gaming on an Intel platform? Reply

As far as I'm aware (maybe Anand can say more), R520 isn't going to have any embedded RAM in the core. So, while the R520 will in some ways be faster than the R500, the R500 is probably still a bit ahead. Remember when the Xbox launched with NV2A while NV20 was in some ways faster (more bandwidth) but only had one vertex unit? That's basically what we're seeing again. Reply

I need a reason to complain, but so far I haven't seen one. Reply

    How about, progressive articles!

Then people with only enough battery power for one mouse click can just wait until the thing is completely finished to read it!

#12 or maybe you could sit down once a day and read several articles one after another. Is clicking an extra link too hard for you? Reply

If you would have taken your head out of Ananad's ass for 5 seconds you would have seen the mention of DAILY ARTICLE, not weekly. Show's over, you can can go back to eating ass now.

Did they not used to post Event: Day 1, Event: Day 2? They did, and it was much better being able to sit down and read an article for 10 - 15 minutes once a day, rather than come back a few times to read a few paragraphs.

It's just an opinion on something totally meaningless. Get over it you losers.

R520 > R500? you know something i've noticed is that the R500 for the xbox360 has lower fill rate. What does this translate to? X360 < X850XT PE? Reply

I agree. I think AnandTech was trying to be the first to post this news, since they are too looking for scoops. I like the bits. They can be written up really quickly for all of us to read and enjoy. :) Reply

I got one important piece of information from this article. The game would not run perfectly smooth on the R520 yet ran good for the next generation consoles.

Does this mean the consoles will remain a year head when they are released?

if there weren't these tiny bits and you had a big article a week later, you would say, "This news is over a week old already" Reply

So R520 isn't vaporware? This next generation of graphics cards could get VERY interesting--G70 is roughly 2.5x the performance of a single NV40, and R520 may actually be seen in greater numbers than one card per hemisphere... Reply
